Glassdoor’s Employee Engagement Report is Out – Get the Data Here
Glassdoor is all the rage. If you are not familiar with Glassdoor, it’s a website where employees and former employees anonymously review companies and their management. Companies either love it or hate it, depending on their Glassdoor rating. Employees love it because it offers them a public place to speak honestly about their employer.
According to the latest Glassdoor Employee Engagement Report, salary is the No. 5 driver of satisfaction and engagement. Culture and values land at No. 4, career opportunities at No. 3, senior leadership at No. 2, and work-life balance comes in first.
In my book, If Not You, Who? Cracking the Code of Employee Disengagement, I talk about the importance of getting the right person in every chair, goal alignment, creating a two-way communication culture, and recognition. However, there are other things that engage employees, which you can leverage to improve your culture:
1. Training. Employees, especially Millennials, want to learn and expand their knowledge base. Provide both internal and external training, so your people can interact with employees from other companies and benchmark what other companies are doing.
2. Mobilization. Are your corporate communications easily accessible via mobile apps? Eighty percent of employees say they regularly access company information via a handheld device, so you need to ensure your content is mobile-friendly. This also holds true for your Careers site, which is the first impression potential candidates have about your firm.
3. Upward Mobilization. Many employees have no desire to be in their current job forever, but employees would stay in a company longer if there were more career opportunities. You must ensure there is a path forward or sideways for employees, so they have other options in your company besides the role they are currently in.
BE AWESOME! Conduct an audit of your training program, communications mobility, and career development strategy. If these areas are not best-in-class, make changes in an effort to create a winning environment that will fuel your employees to be more engaged and give you a lot of discretionary effort every day. Your customers and shareholders will thank you.
