What You Say, Do and Think Speaks Volumes

Today we welcome Jeannette Seibly, an international, award-winning business advisor.
I’ve been a business advisor for more than 24 years, and it never fails to astound me when executives and management teams don’t see a direct correlation between how they talk about their employees (and each other) and their poor bottom line results! Even when companies do a stellar job of hiring the right people (and many don’t, since over 71 percent of people work in jobs that don’t fit them), the company culture often does not support the success of each and every one of its employees.
One company president told others outside his company about the bad job each of his executives was doing. He did this to justify the company’s poor financial results, high turnover and lack of trust between the company and its customers. He failed to take responsibility for his poor business acumen, unclear expectations and inability to stay focused on the right things.
You may think, “I would never say how I really feel about an employee.” The truth is, people know even without you saying it. Your non-verbal actions, tone and attitude speak volumes about how you really feel. (Non-verbal communication accounts for 90 percent of what people hear.)
If you want the best from your people, always speak well of them. Be supportive. Share with others one thing they do really well. Interestingly, soon you will discover other things they do really well too. If there is a performance issue, confidentially talk it out one-on-one with the employee. Provide additional training and/or hire a coach. If that doesn’t work, use a qualified assessment to ensure job fit before changing employees’ work responsibilities (and always use one for hiring).
Create a positive, productive and fun culture by honoring your company’s most valuable asset: each and every one of its employees. Remember, what you say, do and think speaks volumes!
